The Zambian Civil Liberties Union (ZCLU) has strongly condemned the recent actions by the Department of Immigration to flagrantly disregard the High Court orders in a case involving three Chinese and Korean business investors: Han Ho Bae, Pan Peng, and Jia Yugi. According to the organization, the contemptuous action by the Department of Immigration undermines the rule of law and raises serious concerns about Zambia’s commitment to protecting investors’ rights and the rights of all persons living in Zambia generally. The Zambia Chinese Association has reiterated its commitment to helping the Zambian government in mitigating epidemics such as Cholera. Association Chairman Wu Ming says the association stands ready and available for any eventualities that require community participation. Mr. Ming says the Association actively participated in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic as part of the humanitarian and Corporate Social Responsibility between 2019 and 2021. He further adds that the Cholera situation the country is grappling with is not a government problem alone but calls for collective responsibility from all stakeholders which include the Chinese business community which drives its workforce from communities where the disease is ravaging. The government has hailed the Chinese government for the support rendered in the fight against cholera. Vice President Mutale Nalumango says the fight against cholera requires a multi-sectoral response involving the whole-of-society approach.   Speaking when the Zambia Chinese Association handed over assorted materials for the fight against cholera k1.2 million kwacha, Mrs. Nalumango who was represented by Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit National Coordinator Gabriel Pollen says the donation will play a pivotal role in the ongoing fight against cholera.   She says the donation of assorted items is an indication of true humanitarian effort. The Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) and the Department of Immigration have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ensuring that the Engineering Professionals migrating to Zambia have the required skills. Institute Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, David Kamungu says the partnership will help the institution with information on the number of foreign engineering professionals, units, and organizations coming to do engineering work in the country. "This MoU will further help us as an institution to have a record of engineering professionals coming into the country and what kind of skills they are offering," Mr. Kamungu said. The Zambia Chinese Association has donated Cholera utensils worth 260, 000 kwacha to the Zambia Police Service as the Country continues to grapple with the deadly Cholera pandemic which has so far claimed over 350 lives since October 2023. Among the items donated include, 2000 Chlorine, 2000 soap bars, 50 pieces of washbasins, 10 units of water purifiers, 300 Alcohol bottles for medical purposes, 5 boxes of Alcohol wipes, 20 pieces of umbrella and 10, 000 pieces of  Masks. The National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) has disclosed that it has allowed 11 Commercial Utilities to super-chlorinate the water supplied during the current cholera outbreak, to prevent the further spread of the disease.  According to the Zambian Standard on Drinking Water Quality, ZS 190:2010, drinking water is supposed to maintain a chlorine residual of between 0.2 to 0.5 mg/L.  According to a statement issued by NWASCO Public Relations Officer Mandamu Mayowe in the event of super-chlorination, Commercial Utilities can attain residual chlorine of more than 0.5  mg/L to contain any possible post-contamination that may occur in the water distribution network or in storage facilities at customer points.   Ms. Mayowe has further revealed that NWASCO has directed Commercial Utilities to ensure water quality monitoring is enhanced by conducting ancillary tests and submitting results to NWASCO weekly, apart from the approved scheduled...

Social Scientist Innocent Kolala says he expects opposition political parties in Zambia to co-exist and offer effective checks beyond 2024. Mr. Kolala regrets that 2023 was characterized by political rhetoric thus his advice to opposition parties to rise above petty arguments, complaints, and commentary which did not represent the interests of the electorate.
