Kolala takes on Opposition leaders for failing to provide proper checks and balance in 2023

Social Scientist Innocent Kolala says he expects opposition political parties in Zambia to co-exist and offer effective checks beyond 2024.

Mr. Kolala regrets that 2023 was characterized by political rhetoric thus his advice to opposition parties to rise above petty arguments, complaints, and commentary which did not represent the interests of the electorate.

Citing intra-party rivalry in the Patriotic Front (PF) Mr. Kolala encouraged the Edgar Chagwa Lungu and Miles Bwalya Sampa camps to desist from undoing each other.

Mr. Kolala has described ongoing counter-expulsions as weakening the political strengths of the PF.

He says Dr. Lungu's return to active politics has worsened confusion in the Patriotic Front, thus weakening oversight on President Hakainde Hichilema's United Party for National Development (UPND) leadership.

"When I look back and assess 2023, It is regrettable that opposition political parties especially the largest Political Party (PF) concentrated on intra-party fighting at the expense of helping the Zambian people to remind the UPND to deliver on its 2021 electoral promises which include affordable mealie meal, a stronger Zambian Kwacha, and generally better life, to name but three. I urge all opposition political parties to rise above board in 2024 through offering credible checks and balances on Mr. Hichilema's UPND Administration," Mr. Kolala said.

Mr. Kolala has equally implored President Hichilema to desist intolerance as the last two years saw civil society groups complaining over an apparent shrunk democratic space.

"It is sad that in the last two years, especially in 2023, the UPND leadership was intolerant. I appeal to the government to distance itself from diluting Zambia's democratic credentials. All Zambians must be allowed to voice concerns and political preferences as opposed to threatening any critic with an arrest. In 2024, Zambians expect an improved domestic economy, reflected by affordable food prices as access to  Food continues to be a nightmare.

With barely, three years before the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government election Mr. Kolala implored President Hichilema to walk the talk by delivering on his 2021 electoral promises.
