Nalolo MP calls on Youths to lead, not Scroll

Image
Nalolo Member of Parliament Imanga Wamunyima  has called on young people in Zambia to shift their focus from social media distractions to issues of national governance. Mr. Wamunyima has expressed concern that many youths are more drawn to nude videos and online drama than they are to policy matters that affect their future. “Young people are more interested in drama and nude videos. Let them become interested in governance issues,” he said. He has urged the youth to take interest in key national matters such as budget allocations for youth , the work of investigative wings  around the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) report, and findings from the Auditor General’s reports . “If young people are to be ready to lead this country, they must be issue-based. It’s not about being youthful   it’s about being competent and prepared,” Mr. Wamunyima added. The Nalolo lawmaker  has encouraged young people to educate themselves on national processes to ensure they are equipp...

High Court sets date for Judicial Review over river pollution in Kanchibiya

Image
K anchibiya Member of Parliament Sunday Chanda has announced that the High Court for Zambia will hear a judicial review case on 24th September 2025 concerning the pollution of the Kanchibiya and Lwitikila Rivers. Mr. Chanda, who is acting on behalf of his constituents, said the legal action challenges the decisions and omissions by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) and the Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) in addressing environmental degradation linked to gold mining activities in Kanyelele, Impeka. “The Kanchibiya and Lwitikila Rivers have served our people for generations. Today, they are extensively contaminated. Fish stocks have vanished, and the water is no longer safe for drinking, farming, livestock, or domestic use,” he said. He has added that despite numerous engagements with ZEMA and WARMA, no meaningful action has been taken, prompting his office to seek judicial redress. “We’ve filed for judicial review to compel ZEMA and WARMA to uphold their man...

Beltz Mining hails Govt’s Gold sector reforms as ‘Beautiful Challenge’

Image
Beltz Mining Limited Director Nkandu Beltz has praised the Zambian government's efforts to regulate and secure the country’s gold mining sector, describing the current situation as a "beautiful challenge" with great potential for job creation. Mr. Beltz said Zambia is richly endowed not only with copper but also with vast deposits of gold, particularly in the North-Western Province   an area that has recently drawn attention due to incidents involving unregulated artisanal mining. “At the moment, we have seen that Zambia is not only blessed with copper, but also with a lot of gold,” he said. “We’ve also seen some tragic stories coming out of the North-Western Province, and from my point of view, the Zambian government is working very hard to combat this situation and protect citizens by ensuring proper law enforcement.” Mr. Beltz has noted that if the current efforts to stabilize the sector are strengthened with proper licensing and integration of small-scale miners, Zamb...

Cyber Law will shield medical workers from online Attacks – RDAZ

Image
Resident Doctors Association of Zambia (RDAZ) President Dr. Paul Chibwe  has welcomed the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act, stating it will help curb the growing trend of online defamation targeted at medical professionals. Dr. Chibwe sa id  the association has recorded cases where patients, dissatisfied with medical care, took to social media to name and shame doctors without following due complaint procedures. “We’ve seen patients taking pictures of hospital facilities and posting defamatory remarks about doctors on Facebook,” he said. “Some even publish names and specific allegations based solely on their personal opinions, without verification.” He has noted that such social media attacks not only damage the reputation of individual doctors but also undermine confidence in health facilities, making it difficult for professionals to continue practicing effectively. Dr. Chibwe said  there are formal procedures in place for patients to lodge complaints, including revi...

Ex-Health Minister calls for strategic Budgeting in Health Sector

Image
Former Health Minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya has urged the Ministry of Health to shift focus from mere budget compliance to strategic health systems strengthening as it prepares for the 2025 fiscal year. Speaking during a parliamentary committee session on the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Budget Plan, Dr. Chilufya has warned that rigid alignment to indicative planning figures (IPFs) from the Ministry of Finance risks reducing the ministry to a “Ministry of Treatment of Diseases,” preoccupied with drugs, hospitals, and salaries. “What is key when engaging the Ministry of Finance is not just to ask for improved resources,” he said. “You need to recalibrate your budget to speak to a functional health system and link it to your performance indicators.” He has criticised the current budgeting model, saying it promotes stereotyped programmes that fail to meet the broader goals of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Dr. Chilufya has also flagged leadership and governance gaps at institutions such as the...

Solomon Mumba faults Govt for overlooking informal sector in Jobs drive

Image
Politician and professional driver S olo mon Mumba has criticized  the Zambian government for what he describes as a narrow approach to addressing the country’s high unemployment levels. Speaking in an interview, Mr. Mumba said while the government often highlights efforts to create jobs, its focus has largely remained on formal employment opportunities for academically qualified individuals, leaving out a large segment of the population. “The unemployment rate is still high, and government has only concentrated on formal employment,” Mumba said. “What are they doing for those who don’t have academic qualifications? That’s where the problem is.” He has argued that many Zambians, particularly those without formal education, remain sidelined in job creation initiatives. Mr. Mumba has pointed to the driving sector as a potential solution to absorb workers from various backgrounds, but said it has been neglected by policymakers. “If you look at the driving sector, has government done e...

UPND declares 2026 as a violence-free election year

Image
The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has declared 2026 a violence-free general election year and called on all political stakeholders to work together to ensure peaceful polls. UPND Strategic Planning and Resource Mobilization Religious Affairs and Chaplaincy Service Committee Chairperson, Dr. Richard Kakuwa, said political violence must be addressed early by confronting the root causes   such as the misuse of youths, drug and alcohol abuse, and provocative politics. Dr. Kakuwa  says  Zambia should not return to the violent electoral patterns of the past  and has urged political parties to focus on marketing themselves through their manifestos and not through confrontation or intimidation. "Any political party that will engage in violence will be seen by the public as one without an agenda," he said. He has further appealed to political party leaders to begin championing peace now, so that by the time the country heads to the polls in 2026, the sta...

Andeleki demands swift action on ZAMMSA Corruption Audit

Image
Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Human Rights and Governance, Clement Andeleki , has urged law enforcement agencies to promptly arrest and prosecute  all individuals implicated in the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) forensic audit  exposing corruption at the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) . Dr. Andeleki has warned that delays in prosecuting corruption cases , some of which have dragged on for over a decade, risk eroding public confidence in the justice system . Describing corruption as economic sabotage , Dr. Andeleki said the practice undermines Zambia’s efforts to reclaim its middle-income status by 2030 . He has stressed that only stronger laws, timely prosecution, and unwavering political will  can end impunity and ensure public resources benefit ordinary citizens   especially those in rural constituencies like his own. The Katombola lawmaker, who is also a senior member of the ruling United Party for National Devel...

Njovu: I can’t even rate UPND’s performance—they’ve failed on fundamentals

Image
Opposition Democratic Union Party (DUP) President Ackim Njovu  says he finds it impossible to rate the performance of the United Party for National Development (UPND) since it assumed office, citing failure to deliver on key economic and governance promises. Mr. Njovu said if he were a lecturer tasked with grading the ruling party’s performance, he would “tear the answer sheet and throw it away.” “When you look at the basics , mealie meal, fuel prices, the exchange rate, and load-shedding , they are all worse than they were before UPND took over,”  Mr. Njovu stated. While acknowledging the introduction of free education, increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF), and a reduction in political cadre violence as notable achievements, Mr. Njovu has argued that the government has failed in addressing issues that directly affect the daily lives of ordinary Zambians. “They have struggled to deliver on their own promises, especially those meant to reduce the high cost of living an...

Farmers who fail to sell to FRA risk being removed from FISP – Agriculture Minister

Image
Government has warned that farmers who fail to sell maize to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) will not be eligible to benefit from the 2025/2026 Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP). He has clarified that the procurement will be done in a phased manner  in compliance with the law, which requires that maize bought for strategic reserves must have a moisture content of 12.5% . “High moisture levels increase microbial activity, leading to mould, mycotoxins, spoila...

LAZ suit against Speaker Premature — Andeleki

Image
Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Human Rights and Governance, Clement Andeleki, has described as premature  the decision by the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) to sue Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti over her ruling that allowed the continuation of Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 7 of 2025 despite a prior court judgment against it. Mr. Andeleki, who is also a lawyer and a member of LAZ, has questioned the legal basis of the Association’s actions, arguing that the Bill is still a proposal and not yet law, and therefore cannot be challenged in court. "I do not expect LAZ to be suing on behalf of other interest groups," he said. “We are lawyers, and we know that a bill is not a law. The country is guided by legal precedent, and you cannot take legal action against a legislative proposal.” He has cited the landmark 1972 case involving Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula and the Attorney General, in which the court ruled that the Chona Commission was m...
