Solomon Mumba faults Govt for overlooking informal sector in Jobs drive

Politician and professional driver Solomon Mumba has criticized the Zambian government for what he describes as a narrow approach to addressing the country’s high unemployment levels.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Mumba said while the government often highlights efforts to create jobs, its focus has largely remained on formal employment opportunities for academically qualified individuals, leaving out a large segment of the population.

“The unemployment rate is still high, and government has only concentrated on formal employment,” Mumba said. “What are they doing for those who don’t have academic qualifications? That’s where the problem is.”

He has argued that many Zambians, particularly those without formal education, remain sidelined in job creation initiatives.

Mr. Mumba has pointed to the driving sector as a potential solution to absorb workers from various backgrounds, but said it has been neglected by policymakers.

“If you look at the driving sector, has government done enough to address the challenges it faces? This is one of the sectors that can accommodate people from all walks of life, whether educated or not,” he stated.

Mr. Mumba has also raised concern over the alleged influx of foreign nationals taking up driving jobs in Zambia, saying local drivers feel displaced despite repeated government assurances to address the issue.

“Despite promising to tackle this issue, government has done very little. We are still seeing a surge in foreigners coming into Zambia to work as drivers,” he said.

He has called on authorities to take a more inclusive and strategic approach to job creation, saying the current efforts are insufficient.

“If the government is serious about addressing unemployment, they should not only focus on one side. They must look everywhere,” Mumba added.
