Beltz Mining hails Govt’s Gold sector reforms as ‘Beautiful Challenge’

Beltz Mining Limited Director Nkandu Beltz has praised the Zambian government's efforts to regulate and secure the country’s gold mining sector, describing the current situation as a "beautiful challenge" with great potential for job creation.

Mr. Beltz said Zambia is richly endowed not only with copper but also with vast deposits of gold, particularly in the North-Western Province an area that has recently drawn attention due to incidents involving unregulated artisanal mining.

“At the moment, we have seen that Zambia is not only blessed with copper, but also with a lot of gold,” he said. “We’ve also seen some tragic stories coming out of the North-Western Province, and from my point of view, the Zambian government is working very hard to combat this situation and protect citizens by ensuring proper law enforcement.”

Mr. Beltz has noted that if the current efforts to stabilize the sector are strengthened with proper licensing and integration of small-scale miners, Zambia could turn this challenge into a national opportunity.

“If we can mobilize these miners and manage the licenses properly, we can create so many jobs for our Zambian people,” he said.

Citing examples from other African nations, Mr. Beltz has pointed to Côte d'Ivoire, where large mining firms have collaborated with government and artisanal miners under formal agreements to share resources and skills.

“In Côte d’Ivoire, we’ve seen mining giants work with artisanal miners through MOUs to give them access to equipment and skills while ensuring they benefit from the gold extracted from their country,” he explained.

She said such a model could work in Zambia to enhance the livelihoods of local miners and increase the country's economic gains from gold mining.

“So while it is a challenge now, it is a very good challenge to have,” Mr. Beltz said.
