Mulwanda pledges to boost fisheries, mining and infrastructure in Mweru

UPND Mweru Member of Parliament Lesley Mulwanda has pledged to prioritise fisheries, agriculture, healthcare and infrastructure development while pushing for investment in the constituency’s untapped mineral potential.

Delivering his maiden speech in the National Assembly, Mr Mulwanda identified overfishing, poor road networks and limited access to healthcare, electricity and clean water as key challenges requiring urgent attention.

He pledged to promote sustainable fishing methods, fish farming and fish restocking on Lake Mweru to address pressure on fish stocks caused by overfishing and the use of undersized nets.

Mr Mulwanda also committed to helping farmers access inputs and markets, promote value addition to cassava and diversify into crops such as maize, soya beans and wheat, as well as cattle rearing.

And Mr. Mulwanda has also committed to improving school infrastructure, keeping girls in school and expanding skills training opportunities, including lobbying for a skills training centre for young people and fencing Nchelenge High School to improve pupil safety.

In the mining sector, Mr Mulwanda has pledged to work with the Geological Survey of Zambia to interpret high-resolution geophysical data generated by the Government to identify potentially viable mineral deposits in the constituency.

He said improved geological mapping could attract investment and unlock Mweru’s mineral potential, including areas where artisanal copper mining was already taking place.

Mr Mulwanda further pledged to ensure that the Constituency Development Fund was used transparently on projects selected by local communities.

He has endorsed the President’s Grow Zambia agenda, saying the country’s natural resources and youthful population provided opportunities to accelerate production, create jobs and expand economic opportunities.

Mr Mulwanda thanked the UPND leadership and the people of Mweru for their confidence in him, pledging to represent all residents regardless of their political affiliation.
