“Dont abuse your space,” Fube tells Students

Patriotic Front (PF) Chilubi Member of Parliament Mulenga Fube has cautioned students against what he termed the abuse of their space.

Mr. Fube said this is because the nation depends on their independent thinking and intellectual diversity.

Mr. Fube said students play a critical role in shaping national discourse and the country’s economic future, stressing that it is unrealistic and unhealthy for the student population to hold a single, uniform position on complex national matters such as the Constitution or the cost of living.

“It is impossible for all students to speak with one voice on any question. Students are expected to be informed in a manner that enables them to interpret situations objectively,” he said.

He questioned the state of student unionism, saying past generations of students were known for their vibrancy and engagement on issues affecting the general public.

“Where has unionism gone? In the past, students would differ on issues, but they were always active in defending the common man. What is wrong with the current crop of students who cannot stand up for ordinary citizens?” he asked.

Mr. Fube further criticized students who he said appeared to support what he described as a drift toward a one-party state by backing legislative proposals such as Bill 7 without fully interrogating their implications.

“We expected students to read and help the nation understand these matters. Instead, we see them supporting positions that undermine democratic principles,” he said.

He defended remarks made by former Chief Government Spokesperson Chishimba Kambwili, saying the veteran politician had a long history of working with students in championing public causes.

Mr. Fube also warned students against feeling indebted to the government for receiving meal allowances, stating that such support is a right, not a favor.

“They should not think anyone is doing them a favor. That money belongs to them. It is the duty of politicians whether in the Executive or Legislature to provide for students, and students must not allow such provisions to corrupt their intellectual integrity,” he said.
