Zambia suffering from Tribal tension

Zambia Religious Council (ZRC) Executive Director, Howard Banda has expressed concern at the increasing levels of tribal tension in the Country. Mr Banda says contrary to the perception that there is political tension in the country, what is there is tribal tension. He says there is need therefore to address tribal tension. Mr Banda says the church should demonstrate leadership and address the issue of tribalism openly which he says is affecting progress and unity. And Mr. Banda has doubted if the pending dialogue will achieve its intended purpose stressing that the three mother bodies namely Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ), Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) and Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB), are divided.

ECZ urged to start registering remandees as voters- Malembeka

The Prisons Care and Counseling Association (PRISCCA) has called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia to start registering remandees and convicted prisoners as voters. PRISCA Executive Director, Dr Godfrey Malembeka says despite the ruling by the Constitutional Court that remandees and convicted prisoners who have appealed their cases will now be allowed to vote in elections, nothing is being done to ensure that these people are registered as voters. Dr. Malembeka says there is need for the Zambia Correctional Service Commissioner General to undertake a vigorous mobilization exercise and sensitize the prisoners on the need to register as voters. He says his organization expected prisoners to participate in the forthcoming Mayoral by-election and other elections the country is having. Mushrooming of Trade Unions in Zambia irks FFTUZ

The Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia (FFTUZ) has expressed concern at the high number of Unions mushrooming across the Country. FFTUZ President Chingati Msiska says the mushrooming of trade unions has weakened the labor movement's voice in the country. And Mr. Msiska has advised the Trade Unions to stop fighting among themselves but concentrate on improving working conditions for the workers. He has emphasized that what unions should strive is to ensure that they champion a labor awareness programs to advocate for improvement of working conditions and policies as well as creating knowledge about workers rights. Mr. Msiska has reminded trade unions in the country that their main goal is to improve living standard of workers through awareness on rights for workers at workplace and through good policies and working conditions.

PMRC urges govt to target higher growth rates

Policy Monitoring and Research Centre (PMRC) has commended government for the various interventions it has instituted that have brought about consistent growth over the years averaging 4% and above. Commenting on the midyear economic brief presented by Finance Minister Margret Mwanakatwe, PMRC Executive Director Bernadette Deka, however, states that higher growth rates should be targeted in the future if such economic growths are to be of benefit to ordinary Zambians. Ms Deka says PMRC also applauds government for exceeding its revenue target in the first half of 2018 by 3.3 percent. She says the proposed measures by Government to use electronic solutions in revenue collections should be supported by all Zambians. Ms Deka notes that such efforts will ensure that the country has adequate funds to finance all its budget obligations. High road accident related deaths worry- ZRST Chairman

Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST) Chairman, Daniel Mwamba has described the four hundred and thirty two (432) road related traffic accidents recorded by the Zambia Police in the second quarter of 2018 as a tragedy. Mr. Mwamba says the recent spate of road accidents in the country resulting in unnecessary loss of life is worrying. He says there is need for the government to immediately find the solution to the problem of accidents. Mr. Mwamba has appealed to President Edgar Lungu to seriously address this critical issue in order to improve road safety in the country. He has expressed concern that ever since his organization was formed, it has never seen any government action towards reducing the number of road accidents. FRA's Maize price laughable- Chief Mweemba

Chief Mweemba of the Tonga speaking people in Sinazongwe District in Southern Province has described the K65 Food Reserve Agency (FRA) maize purchasing price as laughable. The Food Reserve Agency has announced that it will buy a 50kg bag of maize at K65 during this year’s marketing season an increase of K5 on last year’s price . Chief Mweemba says the K65 the Food Reserve Agency proposed is offering farmers is too little. He says this will negatively affect the farmers’ income who he says spent more money to buy farming inputs. Chief Mweemba says that the farmers will not benefit anything going by the price the FRA is offering. The Traditional Leader has since called on President Edgar Lungu to intervene in this matter and urge the Food Reserve Agency to reconsider the price its offering.
