PF no threat after 2021 million-vote defeat-Andeleki

Ruling United Party for National Development Katombola Member of Parliament Clement Andeleki has said that the Patriotic Front (PF) effectively ceased to exist following the death of its founder and later Fifth President Michael Sata, dismissing claims that the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) is afraid of the opposition.

“How can the UPND be afraid of a party that we defeated with over one million votes in the 2021 general elections?” Dr. Andeleki asked. “The PF was in government, it had all the state apparatus, and yet it was defeated decisively at the polls. The numbers don’t lie.”

Dr. Andeleki has recalled that the 2021 elections were the first since independence in 1964 to be supervised by the military, a measure aimed at ensuring transparency and credibility.

He has described the polls as fair and democratic despite attempts at violence by elements within the PF.

“They were defeated democratically despite the violence that they attempted to perpetuate,” he said.

The MP said the PF’s political decline coincided with the death of Sata.

“At the time Michael Sata died, the PF also died. All that remained afterward were struggles for survival the kicks of a dying horse,” he said, adding that the party has struggled to regain relevance since then.

Dr. Andeleki has further described the UPND government as a fully democratic administration, emphasizing that it was legitimately elected by the Zambian people.

He has reassured political parties intending to contest next year’s general elections that the government will maintain a level playing field.

“Those who want to participate should prepare properly and follow the rules,” he said.

He has stated that the freedoms citizens now enjoy, noting that political expression and media operations are no longer restricted.

“You can travel across the country, wear any party regalia you choose, and participate in political activities without fear. No media house has ever been raided,” Dr. Andeleki said.

Dr. Andeleki has emphasized that President Hakainde Hichilema’s government respects the rule of law, noting that anyone who commits a crime is held accountable.

“Today, you commit a crime, you are on your own. Most people who have committed crimes have been arrested,” he said.

He said  that such a calm and orderly environment is essential to holding credible elections.

“For us to conduct elections that are both fair and transparent, this tranquility is required,” he said.

And Dr. Andeleki has urged political actors to respect electoral laws:

“If you want to participate, follow the rules. This is the only way to ensure that the democratic process remains credible and that everyone’s rights are respected.”
