Smart Applications International unveils new digital health platforms
The launch marks the company’s most ambitious move yet in its eight-year strategic drive to tackle Africa’s healthcare challenges through technology.
The company’s technology solutions currently serve millions of customers in 11 African countries and the islands, and are used by over 9,000 medical service providers across Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi, Cameroon, South Sudan, Somalia, Somaliland, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Mauritius.
At the Smart Healthcare Innovation Conference held at Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka Zambia, the future of Zambian healthcare took a digital turn as Smart Applications International Ltd brought together hospital executives, insurance leaders, and government regulators to witness the unveiling of its two synergistic platforms.
The first innovation, the Smart Access App, transcends the limitations of the traditional medical card by empowering insured members with a secure virtual card and biometric fingerprint authentication.
Beyond access, the app offers a GPS-enabled facility locator, real-time tracking of medical benefits, and a personalized wellness module, giving patients more control and transparency over their healthcare journey.
Its counterpart, SmartHealth+, is a comprehensive hospital ERP system designed to act as the central nervous system for healthcare facilities.
It digitizes the entire patient journey from admission and electronic medical records to billing and inventory management establishing a new standard of operational excellence within Zambia’s healthcare sector.
The unveiling received resounding approval from across the medical and insurance industries, signaling a collective readiness to embrace a new era of digital healthcare transformation.
Speaking at the event, Group Managing Director Harrison Muiru acknowleged the company’s long-term continental vision.
“Our strategy has never been about merely selling software. We are architecting the infrastructure for Africa’s health-tech future. The integration of Smart Access App and SmartHealth+ in Zambia creates a powerful blueprint for a connected ecosystem that we will replicate across the continent, turning systemic inefficiency into seamless, data-driven care,” he said.
Echoing this sentiment, Group Marketing Director Esther Muiruri emphasized the shift toward a more personalized healthcare experience.
“We are moving healthcare from a transaction to an interaction. The era of lost cards and opaque benefit statements is over. We are delivering a paradigm where your identity is your fingerprint, your phone is your portal, and clarity and control over your health are a given. This is the cornerstone of building smarter, healthier societies,” she said.
Bringing the conversation closer to home, Country Manager Joseph Wahome highlighted how the launch will benefit Zambia directly.
“For eight years, we have embedded ourselves within the fabric of Zambian healthcare, diagnosing its unique pain points. This launch is our definitive prescription. With SmartHealth+, hospitals can redirect administrative resources back to patient care, while the Smart Access App ensures every citizen can navigate their health journey with unprecedented ease and security. This is a giant leap for a healthier Zambia,” he stated.
