NHIMA, Ecobank introduce digital solution for easier Health contributions
The National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) and Ecobank Zambia have officially launched the SmartPay platform, a digital payment solution aimed at simplifying and securing healthcare contributions across the country.
The launch follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions, reflecting a shared commitment to improving access to health services for all Zambians.
Speaking during the launch, NHIMA Director General Michael Njapau has described the platform as more than just a technological milestone, it is a strategic step toward enhancing service delivery and financial accessibility in healthcare.
“This partnership with Ecobank provides a reliable, convenient, and secure gateway for making contributions to the National Health Insurance Fund,” said Mr. Njapau. “It is particularly targeted at informal sector members, making it easier for them to stay compliant and access healthcare services.”
Mr. Njapau has added that NHIMA continues to value its relationship with the commercial banking sector, which has played a critical role in growing the Authority’s investment portfolio.
Since its inception over five years ago, NHIMA has registered more than 5.3 million principal members. The new SmartPay platform will allow these members to make monthly contributions, check membership status, and register dependents or beneficiaries without physically visiting NHIMA offices.
He has further revealed that over 29,000 employers are now registered under the National Health Insurance Scheme, emphasizing that universal health coverage (UHC) remains NHIMA’s primary goal.
He has called on all businesses to register their employees and remain compliant with their statutory obligations under NHIMA.
Meanwhile, Ecobank Zambia Managing Director Aina Moore has reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to advancing digital finance solutions through its collaboration with NHIMA.
She said the SmartPay platform integrates with NHIMA’s Enterprise Resource Management system and is accessible through both digital and physical channels.
“Our tailored product for SMEs, called Omni Plus, is a secure, efficient, and user-friendly internet banking platform through which employers can remit their NHIMA contributions,” Ms. Moore explained.
She has underscored that the bank offers multiple secure payment channels, allowing businesses and individuals to contribute effortlessly.
“With digital banking solutions at the forefront, we are transforming the way Zambians interact with healthcare financing,” she said.
Ms. Moore has noted that the partnership reinforces both institutions' commitment to financial inclusion, adding: “The success of any health insurance scheme depends on efficient contribution management. We are proud to offer a solution that improves transparency, enhances efficiency, and removes financial barriers to healthcare.”
