HEA urges prospective students to verify Institutions before enrolling

The Higher Education Authority (HEA) has called on prospective students to verify the legitimacy of higher learning institutions and the accreditation status of their study programmes before enrolling.

HEA Corporate Communications Officer Birbal Boniface Musoba says it is vital for students to check whether an institution is registered and whether the programme is accredited, to avoid wasting time and money.

“The most important thing is to verify the institution with us before you enroll,” Mr. Musoba advised. “It’s not just about losing money, once you lose time, you can’t get it back.”

Speaking when he featured on ZAMCOM Radio in Lusaka, Mr. Musoba has further advised the public to visit HEA’s website at hea.org.zm or use its social media platforms (Facebook, X [formerly Twitter], Instagram, LinkedIn @HEAZambia) to verify institutions and programmes. The authority can also be reached via email at info@hea.org.zm.

“For private institutions, the law mandates that they display their registration and accreditation certificates in public areas not hidden in offices so that prospective students can confirm their legitimacy,” he added.

He has emphasized that qualifications from unaccredited programmes are not recognized by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA), which validates all higher education qualifications in the country.

And Mr. Musoba has also announced that the HEA is conducting the most extensive National Graduate Survey to date, aimed at evaluating the relevance and effectiveness of higher education in Zambia.

“This survey seeks to understand if graduates are finding jobs, how long it takes, and whether their studies align with their current careers,” he said. “This data will help us shape policy and align academic programmes with national workforce needs.”

Graduates from any Zambian higher education institution, up to the class of 2025, are encouraged to participate. The survey takes less than five minutes and can be accessed through hea.org.zm.

“The information we gather will be shared with the Ministry of Education and will influence future policy and planning in the higher education sector,” Mr. Musoba said. “We’re asking every graduate to take part. The more data we collect, the more informed and effective our decisions will be.”
