CPRA condemns viral PF video as Tribal hate speech

The Centre for Peace Research and Advocacy (CPRA) has strongly condemned a viral video circulating on social media showing cadres at the Patriotic Front (PF) Secretariat chanting “No Tonga Song,” calling it a dangerous display of tribal hate speech.

CPRA Executive Director Cliffton Chifuwe, has warned that such rhetoric threatens Zambia’s national unity, social cohesion, and long-standing peace.

Mr. Chifuwe has also expressed deep concern over remarks made by Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M’membe, a key figure in the PF/Tonse Alliance.

While visiting the PF Secretariat, where a parallel funeral gathering has been set up to mourn the late President Lungu, Dr. M’membe allegedly stated: These are bad people, let us not vote for them in 2026.”

He said such comments especially during a period of national mourning are highly irresponsible and risk inflaming tribal divisions.

“This is not a moment for political opportunism. It is a moment for unity and emotional restraint from leaders,” Mr. Chifuwe stated. “We urge all Zambians to mourn President Lungu with dignity, free from hate speech, tribal slogans, and political provocation.”

Mr. Chifuwe has further warned that tribal politics, if left unchecked, could threaten Zambia’s domestic stability and regional peace, adding that history offers dire warnings.

“We must all remember the lessons of history the 1994 Rwandan genocide began with words of division and ended in unimaginable horror. We must never allow Zambia to follow that dangerous path.”

The organization Executive Director has called on law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute all individuals involved in tribal incitement, regardless of political affiliation.

He has also urged the media and social media influencers to handle such sensitive issues with responsibility, avoiding sensationalism and promoting messages of peace.

“The diversity of our nation is a strength, not a threat,” the statement reads. “Let us defend our unity, reject hate, and work together to build a Zambia where every citizen, regardless of ethnicity, feels safe, respected, and valued.”
