NHIMA registers over 9,800 new members under Global Fund pilot project
The National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) has announced the successful registration of 2,755 Social Cash Transfer (SCT) beneficiaries onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Southern Province, under the ongoing Global Fund Pilot Project.
In a statement, NHIMA Head of Public Relations, King Syacika,has revealed that the total number of new members, including principal and beneficiary members, has reached 9,868 a significant milestone towards expanding healthcare coverage to Zambia's poor and vulnerable populations.
“This pilot project underscores NHIMA’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by ensuring that Zambian citizens, including the most disadvantaged, have equitable access to essential insured health services without facing financial hardship,” Mr. Syacika said.
The registration exercise, conducted under the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, and supported by the Global Fund, took place in Livingstone, Choma, and Mazabuka districts.
District Registration Breakdown,
Livingstone: 700 principal members and 2,028 beneficiaries
Choma: 738 principal members and 1,715 beneficiaries
Mazabuka: 1,317 principal members and 3,370 beneficiaries
In total, 2,755 principal members and 7,113 beneficiaries have been registered.
Mr. Syacika has stated that all SCT beneficiaries registered under the scheme will be able to access insured healthcare services from NHIMA-accredited providers nationwide, with costs fully covered by the government through Global Fund financial support.
The registration exercise was conducted from March 17th to April 14th, 2025.
He said key components of the pilot project include the identification and registration of poor and vulnerable households on SCT, issuance of NHIS membership cards free of charge, ongoing sensitization campaigns on the benefits of the NHIS, and continuous monitoring and evaluation.
"NHIMA remains committed to leaving no one behind by reaching more poor and vulnerable populations through targeted outreach and registration campaigns, in line with the government’s goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage," Mr. Syacika said.
He has further disclosed that with continued Global Fund support, NHIMA plans to register an additional 4,000 poor and vulnerable households this year, bringing the total number of beneficiaries under the project to 20,000.
