NGOCC to hold Nationwide Protest against rise in defilement

The Non-Governmental Gender Organizations Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has announced plans for a nationwide protest in response to the alarming rise in defilement cases in Zambia.

NGOCC Board Chairperson, Ms. Katebe, has revealed that the council has already informed Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba, requesting a permit to hold the protest.

Expressing concern over the growing trend of men defiling their own children, Ms. Katebe stated, “It is disheartening that it has become fashionable for men to rape or defile their own children.”

She has emphasized the need for stronger laws to tackle this issue, urging the government to make child defilement a non-bailable offense to deter potential perpetrators.

“We need to ensure that when offenders are caught, they are held accountable without the possibility of bail, creating a clear deterrent,” she said.

In addition to addressing defilement, Ms. Katebe has also expressed NGOCC’s support for proposed constitutional amendments aimed at increasing the participation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in politics.

Ms. Katebe has noted that the current electoral system has failed to create an inclusive political environment.

“We advocate for a more inclusive representation at both the parliamentary and local government levels,” Ms. Katebe stated, adding that the government must ensure the process is transparent and well-guided by a clear roadmap.

She has further called for the introduction of a political parties law that would mandate political parties to nominate inclusive candidate lists, ensuring free and fair representation.

Additionally, Ms. Katebe has recommended reforms to the Electoral Commission Act to empower the commission to reject non-representative party nominations.
