Fumba seeks Law Association of Zambia's help

The African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) Member States and partners annually celebrate the Africa Copyright and Collective Management Day on September 14th.

This occasion brings together stakeholders to raise awareness on copyright and collective management rights in Africa.

In Zambia, the Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA) collaborated with ARIPO and collective management organizations to engage key stakeholders and rights holders. The theme, "Empowering Creative Industries Stakeholders – Building a Sustainable Future for Copyright and Related Rights," highlighted the importance of protecting creative industries.

Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Arts Permanent Secretary Chama Fumba has emphasized the significance of creative industries in driving innovation and shaping cultural identity.

Mr. Fumba has stressed the need to protect the rights of creators, distributors, and consumers to ensure the sustainability of the industry.

And Mr. Fumba has called on the Law Association of Zambia to work closely with the National Arts Council and the Ministry of Sport to facilitate conversations with artists and build their capacity and understanding of existing laws in the entertainment industry.

And speaking when officiating at the commemoration of the Africa Copyright and Collective Management Day Mr. Chama says the sustainability of this industry hinges on the ability to protect the rights of those who create, distribute, and consume creative content.

This occasion serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting and promoting the creative industries in our country. As we celebrate this day, we recognize the significant contributions of creators to our cultural heritage and economic development. We acknowledge the challenges they face in protecting their rights and receiving fair compensation for their work, ”he said.

PACRA Registrar and Chief Executive Officer Benson Mpalo has underscored the role of copyright in ensuring fair remuneration for creators and the importance of collective management organizations in facilitating this process.

Today’s event is not only a celebration but an opportunity for us to engage deeply with key stakeholders and rights holders in Zambia. We aim to explore ways to strengthen Zambia’s copyright and related rights systems to ensure they deliver value to the creators whose work fuels our cultural and economic progress,” he said.

ARIPO Director General Intellectual Property David Njugua has acknowledged Zambia's remarkable support, particularly from Benson Mpalo, and reaffirmed ARIPO's commitment to developing copyright and related rights in its Member States and Africa.

The celebrations provided a platform for stakeholders to share experiences and offer suggestions to improve copyright and related rights in the ARIPO region and Africa.
