My people will not move out of Lunga District - Chief Nsamba

Chief Nsamba of Lunga District, Luapula Province has opposed a suggestion by Local Government Ministry Permanent Secretary Eddie Chomba to consider possibilities of relocating people from Lunga after the chiefdom was ravaged by floods,  with an estimated 8, eight thousand (8,000)  households affected.

While appreciating interventions ameliorating their burden, Chief Nsamba advised Government to render support to them within Lunga District.

"As Lunga People,  we do appreciate what Government is doing in trying to alleviate the problem in the area, but Central Government needs to do more to help the Lunga people within here as opposed to suggesting that we should be relocated," adds Chief Nsamba.

The Traditional Leader has complained that the people have stayed in Lunga since time immemorial and relocating them is an Herculean undertaking (not an easy task), as villagers or communities see the area as a heritage.

The traditional leader explained that such flooding problems have been occurring in past years, thus any talk of relocation of the people in the district to some unknown place is not a lasting solution.

"We have seen floods in Kanyama and other places across the country, but these people have not been relocated, why should we be relocated ?

The question of relocation of the Lunga people will not solve the problem, as the destination earmarked for relocation are already occupied.

"I don't want to go and inconvenience other Chiefs and chiefdoms because I know that there is no area which has remained without any occupation in Luapula. Everywhere one looks to has been under a Traditional Authority, there Isn't any area that is waiting for settlers?

In my view, the issue of relocating does not hold water, what it requires is for Government to quicken efforts to make sure that they start unlocking water channels leading to Lunga District," protested Chief Nsamba.

Chief Nsamba advised government to supervise a very serious programme that will see to it that all the channels causing the floods are worked on immediately through Disaster Mitigation and  Management Unit (DMMU).

"There are some other areas which have been flooded but we have not heard them talk about relocation of such areas, Why should Lunga people relocate? I will not be part and parcel of the relocation as Chief Nsamba."

Chief Nsamba has since suggested that Government should consider engaging the international community to come to the aid and help the people of Lunga District.
