I am not quitting, says Energy Minister
Energy Minister Mathew Nkhuwa says he has no intentions of resigning following calls by National Democratic Congress president Chishimba Kambwili for him to step down over continued load shedding in the country.
Mr. Nkhuwa said he is doing everything possible to address the issue of load shedding and that only President Edgar Lungu can fire him.
”My office is too busy to start engaging in petty issues, I don’t want to get involved into unnecessary issues, I will leave him he [Chishimba Kambwili] can say whatever he wants, he didn’t hire me and I will not resign because I didn’t get permission from anybody to get into this job. I was appointed and if the appointing authority think that am not worth been Energy Minister, then he will deal with me. As far as I am concerned am doing my best. The Load shedding the country is currently experiencing is not the first time,” Mr. Nkhuwa said.
And Mr. Nkhuwa has emphasized that he will not pay attention to those calling for his resignation, but will instead concentrate on addressing challenges affecting the energy sector in the country for the common good of the Zambian people.
He noted that of late the country has made strides towards reducing reliance on hydro power.
He recalled that at one time when “we [Zambia]first experienced load shedding, we were at 99 percent hydro power, now we are saying 80 percent because we have got other sources of energy, such as solar energy, thermal which is 300 megawatts coal power plant that is in Maamba.
“Government has moved to build power plant and it doesn’t take one year to complete, it takes five years, and to do the feasibility study it goes on to up to 10 years, I can tell the people that are doing geo-thermal in southern proving. They have been there for the last ten years and we are looking at another five years before the plant can be operational.”
