Chiengi MP proposes revision of the mining policy

Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) Chiengi Member Of Parliament Given Katuta is calling on parliamentarians to revisit the country’s investment policies.

Ms. Katuta says revisiting the investment policies will enhance local beneficiation especially from the mining industry charging that Zambians have been deprived of the much needed development by some investors especially in the mining sector.

She stresses that Zambians have not benefited from mining companies.

She has appealed to the law makers to come up with investment Laws that will compel the mines to comply with the countries regulations as opposed to laying off workers.

"For me as Law maker, I would suggest that the best way to address this issue, we as Law makers we should look at the investment policy, we need to change especially in the Mines, because this is where Zambians have not benefited as expected,” She said

Meanwhile Ms. Katuta insists that if the mining firms are making loses they should leave the country so that government can bring in new investors to invest in the country.

Ms. Katuta has observed that while roads are been damaged by heavy laden trucks from the mines, the government has been bearing the cost of rehabilitating the roads.

"It is upsetting for me as a law maker, I don't expect any investor to try and ignore what government is asking them to do. In the first place these mining companies if they are not making loses, they would have left a long time, but to my surprise they keep on claiming that they are making loses and they are still around. Why don't they pack and go where they came from so that we can bring in other companies that can come and invest in the mines, ”she questioned.

And President Edgar Lungu recently warned that he will not allow mine owners to lay off workers with impunity.

President Lungu said his administration will not be intimidated by threats from mine owners.

Recently there has been a standoff between government and mining firms following the proposed sale taxes which are yet to be effected.
