Global protests target IMF and World Bank over inequality
As the World’s Finance Ministers, Bankers, and Corporate elites gather in Washington D.C. for the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, waves of protests are erupting across continents from Morocco to Madagascar, Kathmandu to Lima led by young people demanding accountability and a fairer global economy.
At the heart of this movement is the Fight Inequality Alliance (FIA), a coalition representing ordinary people standing up against inequality and corporate greed, amplifying the voices of those most affected by unjust economic systems.
The protests come amid news that billionaire Elon Musk has become the first person in history to amass a $500 billion fortune a milestone the Alliance calls a “stark symbol of extreme inequality.”
FIA General Secretary Jenny Ricks said Musk’s wealth highlights a “rigged” global system that rewards greed while ordinary people bear the cost of economic crises and austerity.
“The system is rigged. It is a heist of epic proportions. The World Bank and IMF are a scam, exploiting the 99% for the benefit of the 1%. People everywhere are drawing a red line and fighting for economies and democracies that put people and planet before greed,” Ms. Ricks stated.
“Tomorrow cannot be written by bankers and billionaires,” Ms. Ricks added. “We need a future shaped by people and communities demanding equality, democracy, and justice.
In Zambia, Alliance National Coordinator Mputa Ngalande has condemned IMF-backed austerity measures, saying subsidy cuts have pushed food, fuel, and transport beyond the reach of ordinary citizens.
“Life in Zambia shows the cruelty of IMF austerity. Subsidy cuts have made daily survival impossible for many, while drought drives hunger and despair. This is not reform it is punishment of the 99% for the profit of the 1%,” He said.
“We refuse to be sacrificed, and we will demand justice at the People’s Summit in Johannesburg.”Mr. Ngalande said.
The People’s Summit, scheduled for 20–22 November 2025 in Johannesburg, South Africa, will act as a counterpoint to the G20, bringing together grassroots movements, workers, feminists, youth, climate activists, and communities to design equitable and sustainable economic alternatives.
The People’s Summit in Johannesburg will show what a world that works for the 99% looks like and why we are fighting so hard for it.”
