Current Road Safety measures not enough — Kaoma

The Safety for People on the Move has expressed concern over the alarming number of road fatalities in Zambia, stating that the current efforts to promote road safety are insufficient.

Safety for People on the Move Founder and President Chifwesa Kaoma has contended that over 2,000 lives are lost annually due to road traffic accidents.

"These are not just numbers. These are faces mothers, fathers, children people we rely on in our communities and the backbone of our economy," the spokesperson said.

Ms. Kaoma has stressed that road safety cannot be addressed in isolation but must involve a comprehensive approach that includes education, enforcement, engineering (infrastructure), and emergency response services.

“We must ask ourselves: are we educating the public enough to change their mindset toward safe road usage? Are our enforcement agencies, such as RTSA and traffic police, adequately staffed and supported to carry out their mandate?”

And Ms. Kaoma has welcomed the Minister of Transport and Logistics Frank Tayali's recent ultimatum to RTSA to finalize the implementation of honorary road traffic inspectors, describing it as a much-needed move to strengthen road law enforcement in the face of staffing shortages.

She has also supported the Minister's recognition of the need to regulate driving schools, but cautioned against scapegoating these institutions alone.

“The problem is systemic. It’s not only the driving schools there needs to be an overhaul of the entire driver licensing system. RTSA, as the final authority that issues licenses, must implement stricter scrutiny to eliminate shortcuts and corruption,” the spokesperson added.

The Safety for People on the Move Founder is calling on government stakeholders to prioritize nationwide public education campaigns, invest in enforcement, and ensure accountability across all levels of the transport system.

“If we continue to lose over 2,000 lives each year, we must question where the country is heading. Road safety is not a luxury it is a necessity for national development.”
