ZUNMO equips provinces for better service delivery
In a bold and inspiring move, the Zambia Union of Nurses and Midwives Organization (ZUNMO) has handed over ten vehicles and motorbikes to its provincial and district offices a gesture that underscores the union’s deep commitment to its members nationwide.
The handover, held in Lusaka, marks a milestone in ZUNMO’s mission to strengthen its outreach, representation, and service delivery to nurses and midwives, even in the most remote parts of the country.
Union President Fray Michelo has described the development as a “strong testament” to ZUNMO’s vision of a well-supported and empowered health workforce.
“Nurses and midwives serve in every corner of Zambia, including the most remote and underserved areas. They must never feel left out when it comes to member education, representation, or incentives,” Mr. Michelo said.
Recognizing transportation as a key pillar in organizational effectiveness, Mr. Michelo said ZUNMO’s leadership resolved at the last National Council meeting to equip district leaders with better tools to reach hard-to-access areas ensuring that no member is left behind.
He said as guided by the Industrial and Labour Relations Act, Cap 269, ZUNMO has placed member education at the heart of its strategic goals.
The 2023–2027 Strategic Plan emphasizes continuous learning, professional development, and the empowerment of its members across all levels.
Mr. Michelo has reminded members that while the union may not always have the capacity to meet every need instantly, its strength lies in unity and collective commitment.
He said the new vehicles and motorbikes, he said, symbolize more than mobility
“These resources must be used to bring ZUNMO closer to every nurse and midwife in Zambia,” Michelo urged provincial and district leaders.
And Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) Secretary General Joy Beene officiated at the handover and hailed ZUNMO’s move as “forward-thinking leadership in action.”
“This act of empowerment is timely and necessary, especially in a country like Zambia where distance and infrastructure can be barriers to effective trade union mobilization and representation,” Beene said.
He has described the initiative as a game changer that will enable ZUNMO to respond quickly and efficiently to member concerns while deepening the union’s relevance and impact.
To the recipients of the vehicles and bikes, Mr. Beene gave a heartfelt charge:
“You now have the tools go out and use them. Reach every corner, listen to your members, understand their challenges, and work with them to find solutions. That is the true measure of this investment.”
He has also encouraged other unions under the ZCTU umbrella to take a page from ZUNMO’s book, adding, “ZUNMO has set an example we must all follow.”
As Zambia’s health sector continues to evolve, ZUNMO’s investment in logistics reflects a deeper commitment to boots-on-the-ground representation and tangible support for the very individuals who keep the nation’s health system running.
With engines revving and missions clear, ZUNMO is on the move quite literally for its members.
