ZCTU urges govt to update Nation on Former President Lungu’s whereabouts
The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has urged the government to take a keen interest in updating the nation on the whereabouts and well-being of former President Edgar Lungu.
ZCTU General Secretary Joy Beene said while illness is a private matter, individuals who hold significant public status such as a former Head of State warrant official communication to avoid unnecessary speculation.
Mr. Beene said the government is the appropriate channel to provide verified information concerning Mr. Lungu's situation.
“The government, through its spokesperson, should inform the nation. The people are not asking for specific medical details, but simply assurance of his safety and whereabouts,” Mr. Beene said. “We want to avoid unnecessary speculation, especially with the advent of social media.”
He has noted that in the past, before the rise of social media, misinformation would spread slowly, but today, unverified information can cause widespread confusion and panic within hours.
“Social media can be dangerous because someone can falsely announce a death, and it spreads quickly. While sometimes information shared on social media eventually proves true, we should not have to rely on it when we have government institutions mandated to communicate with citizens,” Mr. Beene said.
He has stressed that the Ministry of Information and Media has a responsibility to provide timely and accurate information to the public, especially in matters of national interest.
