ZCTU threatens Boycott of Anti-Union Hotels

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has issued a stern warning to hotels and businesses that are hostile toward unionization, threatening to stop all business dealings with establishments that violate workers' rights.

ZCTU President Blake Mulala has announced that the Congress will instruct all labor unions across the country to avoid holding meetings, workshops, or conferences at hotels where workers are not unionized.

“No facility will host our conferences or meetings without confirming if their workers are unionized. If they are not, we will not do business with them,” Mr. Mulala stated.

He has directed ZCTU Secretary General Joy Beene to ensure the directive is implemented.

Mr. Mulala has further warned of launching a global campaign against anti-union establishments, especially multinational firms, saying they will mobilize international unions to boycott such companies.

“This is not just a local fight, labor unions are global, and we will call on our colleagues outside Zambia to stop doing business with these firms,” he said.

He has lamented reports of harassment, demotions, and even allegations of abuse and rape within some hotels, noting that workers’ sick notes are being ignored, and women are denied their legal rights.

“If there is only one hotel available and it refuses to unionize workers, I would rather sleep in a hut than support a business that abuses workers.”

Mr. Mulala has criticized some hotel owners who claim to have political connections, saying they use these connections to intimidate workers and disrupt union activities.

He has also revealed that a Lusaka hotel recently dismissed six workers for attempting to form a union an action that violates both Zambian labor laws and International Labour Organization conventions.

The ZCTU President has called on the Ministry of Labour to intensify inspections and avoid being influenced by politically connected individuals.

“We will name and shame abusive employers. The right to unionize is non-negotiable,” he said.
