‘It’s Embarrassing that Women hold only 15% of Parliamentary seats-Speaker Mutti

Image
Despite years of advocacy for gender equality, Zambia remains far from achieving adequate representation of women in leadership. Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti , has described the situation as “embarrassing” , lamenting that in 2025, only 15% of Members of Parliament are women . “ It is disheartening that despite our commitments to gender equality, we still have such a low number of women in Parliament. Youth representation is even worse, standing at less than one percent,”  Ms. Mutti stated. She has warned that without deliberate action , the country will continue struggling to meet regional and global commitments  on gender inclusion, including the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development  and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) . Ms. Mutti has stated  that without a legal framework mandating gender quotas , Zambia will continue to fall short of representation targets. She has pointed out that many SADC countries are now aiming for...

Stop Opposing Reforms, Mufalali urges MPs from small Constituencies

Image
Deputy Government Chief Whip Likando Mufalali  has called on Members of Parliament (MPs), particularly those from smaller constituencies , to stop opposing the proposed constitutional amendments . Mr. Mufalali argues that blocking these amendments is unfair , as it forces MPs from larger constituencies  to continue facing challenges in effectively delivering development and reaching all corners of their regions. It is not a fair game when MPs from small constituencies oppose these amendments while others struggle to bring development to vast areas. The proposed changes are straightforward, and there is nothing sinister about them,”  he said. Mr. Mufalali said a mong the 13 proposed amendments , one of the key changes involves the delimitation of large constituencies  to improve governance and service delivery. World Vision Zambia urges Harsher Punishments for Child Defilers.

Image
Zambia is grappling with a distressing increase in cases of defilement and sexual abuse, with perpetrators ranging from pastors and fathers to strangers. While law enforcement agencies have made arrests, the rising trend remains a serious concern for many stakeholders. The surge in these cases has sparked widespread alarm, with some activists and community leaders calling for more stringent penalties, including chemical castration for convicted offenders. Others warn that if immediate action is not taken, the country’s efforts to protect children from violence may be severely undermined. In 2020, Zambia became a pathfinding country in the global initiative to end violence against children. This commitment aimed to raise awareness, develop action plans, and promote leadership in child protection. However, the current spike in sexual abuse cases threatens to derail these efforts, drawing Zambia backward in its progress. One of the most vocal advocates for stronger action is World Vision ...

Parliament, not Tiktok, is the place for debate-Speaker

Image
Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, has expressed concern over some Members of Parliament (MPs) who choose to debate national issues on social media rather than actively participating in parliamentary proceedings. S peaking during the National Assembly Media breakfast,  Ms. Mutti specifically pointed out that certain MPs had taken to TikTok and the press to claim that presiding officers were dictating the constitutional amendment process,   an allegation she strongly refuted. Ms. Mutti has clarified that the constitutional amendment process follows a structured approach. She has explained that the executive initiates the proposed amendments after conducting its own consultations before presenting them to Parliament,  and that o nce in the House, the amendments are subjected to parliamentary procedures, independent of executive influence. “There is no way the executive can dictate how Parliament conducts its proceedings. Our rules are clear, and Parliament opera...

Image
T he United Party for National Development (UPND) Presidential Support Programme  Member Frank Bwalya  has come out strongly in defense of the proposed constitutional amendments, calling them a clear demonstration of President Hakainde Hichilema’s selflessness. And Mr. Bwalya has  also condemned opposition parties for spreading falsehoods, particularly claims that the amendments are aimed at extending the President’s term of office. Mr. Bwalya has argued that the proposed amendments have effectively dispelled the opposition's accusations, stating that the President has consistently demonstrated a genuine commitment to constitutional reform. He has pointed out that, unlike previous attempts by the Patriotic Front (PF) to amend the constitution, the current proposals are transparent and open for public scrutiny.
