Zambia launches Ambitious 5-year Strategic Plan to empower Women in Climate Action
The Women Leaders for Climate Action (WLCA) has unveiled a comprehensive 5-year strategic plan aimed at promoting women's leadership in driving solutions to climate change.
The plan, launched by Vice President Mutale Nalumango, outlines an ambitious funding target of US$1 million per year to support community and environmental resilience projects led by women.
The strategic plan focuses on four key themes: enhanced community resilience, resilience of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), empowerment of women leaders, and enhanced ecosystem resilience.
The plan also prioritizes the allocation of US$500,000 per year for training and capacity-building programs for female leaders in sustainability practices and leadership.
Vice President Nalumango has underscored the importance of placing women at the center of climate action, citing their vulnerability to climate hazards and their critical role in food production and agricultural workforce.
Mrs. Nalumango has noted that climate change threatens food security, directly impacting women's agricultural livelihoods and exacerbating poverty and malnutrition.
“The WLCA's strategic plan aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 on climate action and SDG 5 on gender equality. The organization seeks to promote women's leadership and enterprise in driving solutions to climate change, recognizing the critical role women play in addressing this global challenge”, she said.
With the launch of this strategic plan, Zambia takes a significant step towards empowering women to lead the fight against climate change.
Mrs. Nalumango says the WLCA's efforts will contribute to a more resilient and sustainable future, and the organization's commitment to promoting women's leadership in climate action is a beacon of hope for a better tomorrow.
