Protect Your Health: MP Advocates for Male Circumcision
UPND Solwezi East Member of Parliament Dr. Alex Katakwe is urging men and young people to undergo circumcision to safeguard themselves against HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
As
a strong promoter of male circumcision, Dr. Katakwe has emphasized
that this simple procedure can significantly reduce the risk of
various health issues, including cancer of the penis, urinary tract
infections, and transmission of the Human Papilloma Virus, which
causes cervical cancer in women.
Dr. Katakwe who is also a
medical professional, has stressed that circumcision is crucial for
men's overall physical health, particularly in Zambia, where HIV
remains a significant challenge.
Zambia has made significant progress in implementing Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) programs, with approximately four million men circumcised between 2009 and 2021.
According
to statistical modeling, these circumcisions have averted 26,000 new
HIV infections and are expected to prevent 170,000 more by 2030.
The
ShangRing device, a new method for circumcision, is expected to help
the government reach its target of preventing 170,000 new HIV
infections by 2030.
This
device allows for non-surgical circumcision, making the process
easier and more accessible.
Ethel Mulenga, whose sons have
undergone circumcision, has expressed relief and peace of mind
knowing her children are protected from STIs and other sexual
illnesses.
Dr. Katakwe's advocacy for male circumcision is
aligned with the World Health Organization's (WHO) guidance on
devices for medical male circumcision for HIV prevention.
The WHO recommends male circumcision as an effective strategy for reducing HIV transmission.
“Remember, circumcision is a vital step towards protecting your health and well-being”, Dr. Katakwe said.
