President Hichilema advocates for Constitutional Reform to boost Democracy
President Hakainde Hichilema has emphasized the need for constitutional reform to ensure that the country's founding document accurately reflects the aspirations of all citizens.
“Despite previous efforts, a consensus on this critical national document remains elusive, ”he said.
The President has reaffirmed his government's commitment to facilitating a cost-effective, efficient, and credible reform process, building on the substantial work already done.
He has underscored the significance of the constitution as a defining document for the nation's identity.
Furthermore, President Hichilema has reiterated his dedication to upholding the rule of law, deepening democratic credentials, and respecting the principle of separation of powers. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening oversight institutions.
The President assured citizens that his government remains committed to protecting and upholding their rights, while also acknowledging the accompanying obligations and responsibilities.
He has stressed that the rule of law, respect for human rights, and constitutionalism are fundamental to his administration's governance philosophy.
“Your government remains committed to respect, protect, and uphold the rights of all citizens. With every right, however, comes obligation and responsibility,” he added.
He says “the rule of law, respect for human rights and constitutionalism are at the core of our governance. We are committed to upholding and protecting these principles,” he stated.
In
his address to the 4th Session of the 13th National Assembly,
President Hakainde Hichilema has highlighted the government's ongoing
efforts to implement social protection programs aimed at improving
the living conditions of vulnerable populations.
The
President has reported a significant increase in the number of
households benefiting from the regular social cash transfer program,
from 1,027,000 in 2022 to 1,311,000 as of August 31, 2024. To further
support these households, a top-up of ZMW200 per month is being
provided for 12 months, starting from June this year.
Additionally,
the government has launched the Drought Emergency Cash Transfer
Program to enhance food and nutrition security. This program benefits
952,570 households that experienced crop failure and are not part of
the regular social cash transfer program, providing ZMW400 per month
for 12 months.
The total number of beneficiary households
for both programs now stands at 2,263,671. President Hichilema
emphasized the positive impact of these initiatives on the lives of
citizens.
Furthermore, the President Hichilema has
highlighted his administration's commitment to expanding civic and
democratic space, noting that no media institutions have been closed
down for political or other reasons since taking office three years
ago.
