World Vision Zambia pledges ongoing support amidst drought crisis

Zambia [WVZ] working in partnership with the Disaster Management and
Mitigation Unit [DMMU] and World Food Programme [WFP] is delivering relief food
to families in need.
WVZ has
pledged ongoing support to Zambia amidst the drought and food insecurity
crisis.
The Vision has
already provided humanitarian assistance to over 319,000 people and aims to
reach 500,000 by April 2025, with a US$20 million response plan.
Its effort
focuses on protecting children, especially girls, and includes empowerment
interventions like drilling boreholes, providing water in schools and health
facilities, and supporting sustainable farming practices.
With WVZ assistance, combined with government and stakeholder’s efforts, has ensured that no one has died of hunger, and children have remained in school.
WVZ Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs Director Bernard Zyambo said a response plan of 20 million dollars targeted to reach 500,000 people by April 2025, followed the declaration by President Hakainde Hichilema's National Disaster and Emergency.
According to President Hichilema's statistical report, rainfall deficits (droughts) resulted in 8 out of 10 provinces recording reduced national crop production.
Mr. Zyambo says the organization has invested heavily in Zambia to ensure that children, especially girls, are protected.
"As World Vision Zambia, we have instituted interventions outside the emergency response. We are managing the biggest water and sanitation programme outside the government. Every year, we drill a lot boholes, mechanise water system, and provide water in schools and health facilities. We continue investing in livelihood and climate change by re-greening and supporting farmers in sustainable way of farming annually, “Mr. Zyambo said.
Mr. Zyambo indicated that through ongoing humanitarian assistance, cases of deaths associated with hunger have been averted.
He applauded the government and other stakeholders for unwavering responsibility in keeping children in class on account of a school feeding programme.
And the National Food and Nutrition Commission [NFNC] has commended WVZ on its contributions and urged other compassionate partners to supplement government's efforts by providing relief food, emphasizing the need for a variety of nutritious foods to address dietary needs.NFNC Deputy Executive Director Matthews Mhuru says the NFNC is delighted that WVZ has been distributing food to affected districts and looks forward to seeing other foods being provided to meet the nutritional requirements of the people, particularly in areas negatively impacted by drought.
Mr. Mhuru has emphasized the importance of nutritious through diversification of food options, to complement the staple maize and address dietary needs.
